UK: Hell Fire Club Books, 2017. First Edition. First edition in book form. Volume measures 8.5” x 11”. Portfolio limited to 42 copies bound in virgin calfskin. Held inside are two hand-made paper books with a white archival paper wrapper with tipped on title and seal plate. Housed in a cloth slipcase. The first book contains a color facsimile of the original manuscript (unpaginated [60pp]), the other a transcript of the manuscript with an introduction by Travis Shores (unpaginated [30pp]). The slipcase is a little tight and perhaps not exactly deep enough, resulting in portfolio sticking out a tiny bit (see photos), otherwise all components are in fine condition.
The original handwritten grimoire (circa 1830) was most likely copied from an earlier 18th century source and was probably a personal copy as opposed to a copy prepared for circulation. It is stated in the introduction to the transcript that the “Edward Hunter” of the title page is Edward Hunter, [Jr.] (1793 - 1883) who was a Presiding Bishop of the Church of Latter Day Saints (The Mormons) from 1851 (called by Brigham Young) until his death. Additional information regarding the Mormon’s alleged connections with ceremonial magic, and the manuscript’s similarity to one located in Salt Lake City, is in the introduction (see Peterson’s “The Clavis or Key to the Magic of Solomon” ). As a side note, the publisher has stated that the transcriber “may” be the Mormon Edward Hunter who was a Bristol-based merchant before becoming involved with the LDS, indicating the possibility that nobody really knows the true identity. There was also an Edward Hunter who was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, though he wouldn’t necessarily fit the narrative if the copied manuscript is indeed from 1830. That being said, there is no date written anywhere on the manuscript. Contents of the manuscript include: The Dispositions required of a person wishing to partake of the Secrets of the Cabalistic Science; Of the Matters which Serve for the Operations & The Instruments proper & necessary for the Operations of the Art; The Influences & Secret Virtues of the Moon; Of the manner of working the Figure, Talismans, Characters & following the Rules of the Art; Of the hours of the Day & the Night in respect to the Planets which govern them; Of the proper Perfumes suitable to the Seven Planets; Of the Oraisons, Invocations & Conjurations for the days of the week; Of the Oraisons in form of Exorcisms, to Consecrate things which serve to the Operations of the Great Art; and additional content that deals with the characters, precious stones, trees, and perfumes for each of the seven planetary days of the week.
